The Little Green Schoolhouse: Thinking Big About Environmental Health and Ecological Sustainability in K-12 Schools in the U.S.

One in five Americans —55 million children, teachers, administrators, nurses and janitors—spend their days in K–12 schools. Yet our current school systems are models of unsustainability that threaten children’s health, and contribute significantly to society’s broader environmental and health problems.

It is within our reach to create schools that are healthy environments for students and staff; schools that promote ecological sustainability, by using alternatives to toxic chemicals, pursuing green building and maintenance practices, changing  resource consumption patterns, serving nutritious food, and teaching students to be thoughtful stewards of their communities, the earth and its resources.

In this report we invite you to imagine this “green” reality. We hope the report encourages all who interact with schools in their personal and professional lives. We aim to develop a positive vision of individual schools, districts, statewide educational efforts, and a nationwide school system that is healthy, joyful, and sustainable.
